A little later I asked the mom why she didn’t make her son obey her. She said, “I remember being the oldest and feeling like everything was my responsibility and that my mom didn’t listen to me. So I vowed not to overload my first born with tasks and to listen to him.”
What had happened, which so often it does, this mother swung too far. Wanting to avoid the mistakes she felt her parents had made, she made an opposite error.
This is a true story and it is now ten years later. This now adult son is still an excuse maker. He can talk his way out of anything. His work ethic is not something that makes his mother proud. She struggles with what happened to this boy.
We all have pasts that either spur us on or haunt us. Don’t let your past cause you to water down what God has shown you in His Word. Try to go to Him with a clean slate, an open heart.
