Yes, I know it doesn’t always look like that. Yet, this is a perspective of the rod we could all use. Proverbs 22:15 “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.” It feels good to a child to be helped in driving out foolishness. Proverbs 29:17 “Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.” Parents will have peace and as the four year old above told us, it brings peace to the child too.
A friend shared this story with me. While playing with her four year old son, he started to fuss. She reminded him not to fuss and told him to wait there for her. As she started to walk away the little fella asked, “Are you going to get the happy stick?” Not trusting her ears, the mother responded, “The what?” “You know, the happy stick, so I can find my joy.” he stated. “Oh yes, I am going to get the happy stick.” Mom answered with a chuckle. Later that day, Grandma came to visit and asked junior how his morning had been. In a quite matter of fact manner grandson informed her, “I had been fussy, but Mom used the happy stick and now I have joy.”
