Family traditions are great for building unity and bonding family members together. Some traditions can suddenly feel strange when company is involved. That is what happened last week on our way home from our mid week AWANA program. After my four and my friends two children all settled into the car, we started our half an hour trip home. Suddenly, my daughter said, “O.K. let’s hip, hip, hooray!” A quick explanation was given to our friends that on our way home we each (Mom too) take a turn telling what we did for the night and after each person shares we cheer, “hip, hip, hooray”. As an end to our cheering we say the next person’s name and it is their turn to share. I wasn’t sure what our friends would think of the whole experience and was a little nervous how the somewhat quieter daughter would feel. They all shared and seemed to enjoy the hip, hip, hoorays along with the rest of us. Afterwards, my friend leaned over and asked, “Is that how you find out what is going on and get them to talk?” Wow, I hadn’t looked at it that way. Because we talk a lot, I can sometimes forget that not all families communicate like we do. The benefit is there though; it is a fun way to hear from each child’s perspective how the evening went. So if you are looking for a way to get your children to share more details of their events then try “hip, hip, hooray.”
