The Measure of a Young Child
(up to age 12)
Obedient—doing what they are told, when they are told, with a good attitude
Pays attention—looks an adult in the eye without playing with a toy, trying to walk away, interrupting or making excuses
Is considerate of others—aware of being a distraction to others, doesn’t take the biggest piece
Learns to share—offers what having to others (ex: drink or snack), cheerfully shares when others ask
Accepts discipline without anger or pouting—admits wrong, asks forgiveness and moves on cheerfully
Responds to direction to control his or her emotions—when told to stop fussing, stops; when told to redo with a good attitude, does it
Developing good work habits—works when there is work to be done, does not hide or do as little as possible
Can handle pain—not dramatic when hurt, response appropriate to injury
