This man went to an interview at a local coffee shop.
After polite introductions the perspective employer got right to the point. “So why should I hire you” he asked rather roughly. He continued without waiting for an answer, “I really don’t like your generation at all. I have had to fire three of you in the past month. The first girl had taken the job because she liked coffee but she wouldn’t touch a broom because that was not what she applied for. The second fellow wouldn’t put down his phone; he thought it was his right to keep in touch while he worked. The third couldn’t understand the importance of getting to work on time. He was completely undependable.” He took a breath, then finished, “So why should I hire you?”
Stories like this prompt in me a lot of questions: Why are these young adults so irresponsible? How could they think these views are right? Weren’t there signs before this? Couldn’t they have been taught earlier how to work hard? How can we turn this around?
Perhaps there is more I can do, but the one thing I know I can and must do for sure is train my own children. Right here in my home I can erase this entitled attitude that is flooding this generation.
How?
There is no quick fix; this is a way of life we are trying to instill. But, awareness is a great place to start. Then we can weigh each situation and decision by its impact on our goal.
Parents, let’s not let our son or daughter be the employee that gets fired because they feel entitled.
