As soon as I heard this expression, another time came to mind when we could use this question. What about when life is too busy? When we are busy with outings or even when we are together but feeling hectic with activities or people, this phrase could help open communication.
There are two daily rituals we have added to our big fat Greek summer. First, we are taking one hour of quiet time every afternoon, to allow us to recharge and not get too run down. Secondly, instead of Bible time, I am chatting with the children each evening before bed to see if there is anything they need addressed from the day. We also give compliments to each other for the areas we saw each other do well. And then we pray.
To these times I have added a purposeful touch with each child individually and have and will continue to ask periodically, “Is there anything you need from me?” So far, there have not been any big needs, but they know I will ask and they know I want to help them.
